Old tutorial for Blender 2.49 [link]
:bulletorange: This is the new updated version of it for Blender 2.6. :bulletorange:

:bulletorange::star: FAQ :star::bulletorange:
:bulletblack: I am using model X from a different game Y and I have a problem with ... !
This tutorial should work for most models, however, models exported from different games may be using different textures or something, that needs different settings than Lara's models. I'm sorry, but I can't help you with that.

It seems the method is outdated now at least for me (2.76b), because no matter where is the obj file, the models are imported textureless.

Why mine looks like she got a serious skin problem?
johnzero7 Featured By Owner Edited Jan 2, 2015
The problem is the normal map sampling settings.

Select the material, select the texture used has normal map. Go to the Image Sampling Panel and check the Normal Map checkbox.
You need to do this for every normal map.

I made a new addon for Blender to import and export XPS/XNALara models.
It imports the mesh, the armature and creates all the materials for you!
And it works with .mesh and .mesh.ascii files!! No need port to OBJ.
It work with blender 2.7 or greater

Almost Forgot the link, here it is.
Hope you find it useful
TheParaChuter Featured By Owner Aug 19, 2015
The same happend to me too and I selected all normal mapping and rendered it again and it's still there. What did I do wrong?

how do i add the lightmaps that are included with some XNA lara models ?
darkknightstrikes Featured By Owner Oct 29, 2014  Hobbyist Digital Artist
For some reason in my model, the skin parts (It´s a model of the newest Halloween Ayane costume) are all transparent and I´m not sure what I have to try now.

Thnx 4 the tutorial !

I have a weired looking when i render this imported XNALara-Model:…

I think it has something to do with the textures.
The model has Bump-Mapping i think.

Has anyone a idea how to fix this ?

Helped quite alot when i was trying to get rid of a shine effect on a model I have. Still having some bother with the look of their skin but I might have just missed some of the steps.

In any case, thanks for the tutorial =D

I haven't understood how to fix the eyes or what you do at the end. I think you should contain more details.
It's helpful by the way :)

Thanks for the tutorial, very nicely made n 'twas very helpful :) I used the tutorial with my Ayane model but I have a few problems like some of her skin being too rough (like old man skin) and her eyes not appearing in the render even after I found a second sorta white eyeball set around the actual eyes and made it transparent, I did wut I could, is this a problem with the textures or settings in the preceding procedures :?
autumnlovesvocaloid Featured By Owner Mar 2, 2014  Hobbyist Artist
Really stupid question, but how do you even open a model into Xnalara? I'm trying to get a Balthier model in Blender, but it is .ascii so I downloaded XNAlara so I could export it into a file type that worked. But now I don't even know how to load models into XNAlara because it doesn't have a button allowing me to browse my files.... I don't understand how this program works, I understand Blender.

BlackestFlame Featured By Owner Mar 9, 2014  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Just put the folder of the model and its textures in the data folder in the XNALara_XPS directory, then it will appear in the 'add model' menu in the program. I frequently run into these lame problems with these programs, the solutions are usually straightforward (so much so that it's usually hard to find a written solution somewhere) but without them u can't take a single step :l Good luck.
BlackestFlame Featured By Owner Oct 7, 2014  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Should come in the program's directory, no? :|
XNAaraL Featured By Owner Oct 10, 2014
What should come in the program's directory? The tutorial? Or the model?

  • XNALara/XPS program's Directory (XNALara_XPS) contains a subdirectory named "data" (XNALara_XPS\data)
  • Create in this data directory a new Folder. For example "YourMOD" (XNALara_XPS\data\YourMOD)
  • Put your model file, called Generic_Item.mesh.ascii inside your MOD Folder (XNALara_XPS\data\YourMOD\ Generic_Item.mesh.ascii )
  • Put all texture Images into your MOD Folder (XNALara_XPS\data\YourMOD\face_diffuse.png)
  • The model  appear only in the 'File-->Add Item(s) ...' menu, if the ASCII file is converted to the binary format. ==> Convert it!!
    • Open the Generic_Item.mesh.ascii file with the menu item 'Modify-->Load Generic_Item'
    • Save the ASCII model as binary with 'Modify-->Save Generic_Item'
  • Now you can open always the model with 'File-->Add  item(s) ...'

I'm so angry i'd shoot myself. For one hour ive been trying to add a background picture in blender. i tried thousands and thousands of damn options and it still doesnt want to be in the final render picture.  When im in the workspace it shows up really nice but when i try to render i have a god damn grey background. Can you please help? Im about to give up on this god damn software for being so annoying.  Even xnalara has a proper background image feature, but no.. blender that has tons of updates can't even implement a feature right.

I'd really appreciate it if you could help.

another question: can you make Lara's (or any model's) hair with the STRAND tool in Blender's Cycle render engine? if so, how?
Damiel Featured By Owner Sep 21, 2013
question: is the armature imported along, or do you need to add it in blender?
if you need to add it in blender, do you add the armature as a whole, or bone by bone?

I'm more interested into the rigging, posing and animating, then modelling (because I'm absolutely rubbish at modeling!)

Love these tutorials, my only problem is I have never used any 3d program apart from xnalara (and even then I stumble in the dark .. lol)
I have no idea whatso ever when it comes to programs like blender, I cant even change the camera angle/perspective or rotate the model..
I get frustrated so easily  .. lol
One day I hope to get better :D

I have Blender 2.65, it's very complex and different from 2.63. Can you make a similar tutorial, please? I really wanna improve my deviation styles!
Merzul Featured By Owner Aug 27, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
When I'm renderin, there's no textur on the models.
(If this is important, I'm using Juliet from Lollipop Chainsaw, her Dad and Nick.
Even when I'm trying to put on textur, there only appears everything in pink/purple)
Now, is that, cause I'm doing something wrong, or are the models some kind of defect?
I can follow every step, but in 3D Mode and Rendered pics are no kind of texture whatsoever... :(
